A new floor to replicate the original tiling that was damaged beyond the point of restoration. Following the removal of the old damaged tiles and digging out the old concrete a new floor was relaid and replica tiles that matched the original floor pattern were fitted.
The original encaustic tiles with the inlaid motifs were rescued for reuse.
The magnificent tiled interior of the Victoria Gallery and Museum is housed within Liverpool University in the buildings designed by the architect Alfred Waterhouse that were built to house the new university and are at the centre of the now much expanded campus. Alfred Waterhouse commissioned Burmantofts of Leeds to manufacture the tiles which adorn the main hall on the ground floor, now the restaurant/cafe area, and the stairs and galleries leading to the floors above. The building was completed in 1892 and eventually after serving different purposes as the university grew in 2008 following renovation it was opened as a gallery and museum for the public.
In 2018 Rieveley Ceramics was called in to carry out conservation repair to tiles within the building.
New tiling installed on an interior and exterior porch with stepped divide. The design chosen by the clients was from a tiled floor in Lyme Park, a nearby historic house. Close consultation with the clients was maintained throughout to ensure their needs and requirements were successfully achieved.
